Guatemala Uncovers Destabilizing Plot

Guatemala -  Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom on Wednesday denounced a destabilizing plan by sectors that have been affected by government-led actions against organized crime.

In his address to the nation, the president referred to Tuesday's attacks against public transport which, apart from leaving some victims, was used by some sectors to cause uneasiness, disorder, and instability.

"I call upon the people not to be led by rumors, provocations and misinformation," said Colom, and denied stories about the introduction of an alleged state of siege.

He said events were exaggerated to attempt against democracy and the people's peace of mind.

"We are aware it is a destabilizing plot supported by any sort of mafia affected by the actions of our government," Colom sustained.
