Central America Summit in Nicaragua

Managua -  Heads of State and Government members of the Central American Integration System (SICA) are meeting Wednesday in this capital to review their work and exchange on the impact of the crisis in the region.

Convened by Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega, statesmen will also define positions to take a common front to the Americas meeting, to be run in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on April 17-19.

Regional people make efforts to face the international economic crisis, and avoid fall in exports and unemployment increase, one of the aspects included in the event.

In case of Nicaragua, the country expected a 20-percent setback in exports for this date, however, about nine percent has been reduced so far, according to official figures.

The SICA, made up of Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and Dominican Republic (as an observer), will also evaluate the reform and modernization project of the system organizations, a plan inked in the January 15 meeting held in Managua.

The agenda includes pending issues to be analyzed in the seventh negotiation round between Central America and the European Union for an Association Accord, slated for March 30 in Honduras.

Other aspects will be the definition of the rule to join Japan as an extraterritorial observer of the group, and debate Russia's interest to meet with Central American foreign ministers, Deputy Foreign Minister Manuel Coronel Kautz stated.

Topics related to food security and energy will be also on the list.
