The Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel)
- the newly created telecommunications
regulator - yesterday announced the approval
of the application by Worldcom de Costa Rica
to provide telecommunications services in
competition with the state telecom, the
Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE).
The approval is only the first step in the
process of obtaining a license to provide
telephone and internet services in Costa
Rica, an area held exclusively by ICE for
the last 80 years.
In addition to WorldCom, there are 19 other
companies interested in providing telecom
services, that include Dodona SRL (Amnet),
Intertel Worldwide, R&H international and
Callmyway NY.
The next step in the process that can take
up to six months, is to have the approval
published in the official government
publication, La Gaceta, and then meet the
specific regulations requirements set out by
the Sutel.
The Worldcom said yesterday that it was
pleased with the Sutel decision and that the
most important step in the process has been
finalized.
Worldcom Costa Rica S.A. on its website
makes it clear that it has no affiliation or
associatio with Worldcom/MCI in the United
States or any of its subsidiaries and is a
100% Tico (Costa Rican) company.

that Worldcom had announced that it will
offer wireless connections from 1 Mbps to 12
Mbps for between us$100 and us$170 per
month."
