Tender His Presidential Nomination Bid
Former Costa Rican president Rafael Ángel
Calderón Fournier has asked to meet with the
executive committee of the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC) party to discuss his
intention to register as the party's
candidate for the 2010 presidential
elections.
Calderón, although he is currently in the
middle of a corruption scandal trial has
said he intends to seek the party's
nomination, confident that he will be
vindicated by the courts before the
presidential elections kick off.
Calderón is alleged to have taken part in
payoffs and receiving money in the
Fischel-Caja scandal invoving seven others,
from the former president of the Caja
Costarricense de Seguro Social (Caja) to the
president of the pharmacy chain Fischel.
The party nomination registration is open
until April 15, when former president
Calderón is expected to tender his papers.
To date no other candidates have made public
their intention to seek the party's
nomination.
The PUSC party alternated power in Costa
Rica with the Partido Liberacion Nacional (PLN)
party for decades until the 2006 elections
that saw the Partido Accion Cuidana (PAC)
party, led by Otton Solis, assume the role
of opposition.
The PUSC party, under the leadership of
Ricardo Toledo was decimated in the 2006
elections, following eights years of
governing by Miguel Angel Rodriguez
(1998-2002) and Abel Pacheco (2002-2006).
Rodriguez is facing his own legal problems
alleged to have received a payoff in the
Alcatel-ICE scandal and for some time shared
accompanying cells in La Reforma prison, as
both former presidents were being held in
preventive detention on separate charges in
separate cases at the same time.
Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier (born in
Diriamba, Nicaragua) served as President of
Costa Rica from 1990 to 1994. His father was
Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, who was
president from 1940 to 1944. |
