The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) -
national weather service - is predicting
less rainfall for the coming months.
The IMN says that the expected rain levels
for the month of March (this month), April
and May is expected to be lower that the
levels experienced in 2008.
The weather service explained that of the
seven hurricanes forecast, Costa Rica will
only feel the indirect effects of two,
meaning less winds, rainfalls and tides.
Rosario Alfaro of the IMN, says this
hurricane season will be more active, with
two more hurricanes than the previous year,
but two less affecting Costa Rica.
The lower rainfall will be more directly
felt in the Pacific northern zones
(Guanacaste) and the Central Valley.
Although there amount of rainfall will be
lower than in 2008, it will be higher than
in historic levels.
The meteorologist says that in the Central
valley an increase of 15% of rainfall is
being forecast, in relation to historic
levels, but that is about 25% below 2008
rainfall.
April is the month of transition from the
dry or summer season to the wet that usually
comes in by the middle of May.
Alfaro is predicting that the transition
from the dry to rainy season will take place
between May 6 and 10 in the Central Valley
(San Jose), April 1 an 5 in the Pacific
south (Golfito), April 21 to 25 in the
Pacific central (Jaco, Quepos) and Mary 11
to 15 in the Pacific north (Guanacaste).
