"No Show" For Biden Visit
The United States Vice-President is coming
on Sunday and all the president of Central
America will be in Costa Rica to join Costa
Rican president, Oscar Arias, in welcoming
Joe Biden, except one - Daniel Ortega.
Nicaraguan officials said over the weekend
that vice-chancellor, Manuel Coronel Kautz,
will take Ortega's place in the ceremony
scheduled on March 30 at Casa Presidencial
in San Jose.
El Salvador's president, Tony Saca and
president-elect, Mauricio Funes, will be
there. So will Alvaro Colom from Guatemala,
and osé Manuel Zelaya from Honduras.
Although Martin Torrijos of Panama and Dean
Barrow from Belize, have yet to confirm,
they are expected to attend.
The Biden visit is to renew the interest of
the US government of its neighbours and
trade partners. US president Obama will be
meeting personally with all the Central
American president in the coming weeks
during the sessions of the V Cumbre de las
Américas - Fifth Summer of the Americas,
where the heads of the 34 American states
will gather in Trinidad & Tobago
between April 17-19, 2009.
"The decision to open the White House, early
and on time, a discussion with the
administration of President Oscar Arias on
various topics of interest, honor the
country and is a clear recognition of the
history of Costa Rica, the oldest democracy
in Latin America as a strategic partner of
the United States in the region, " said
president Arias.
