Pricesmart Throws Out Plastic Bags

Shopping at Pricesmart in Costa Rica during the past couple of weeks has been interesting, as the chaing of stores in Costa Rica has dropped the use of plastic bags for its customers to take their purchases home with. The "no bag" policy is in effect at all four current Pricesmart stores in Zapote, Heredia, Escazú, Llorente de Tibás and the soon to open store in Alajuela.

José Luis Laparte, president of Pricesmart, says all of the chain's 25 stores have stopped used plastic bags.

In Costa Rica the Pricesmart uses on average 12 million plastic bags annually. Overall the chain, according to Laparte, uses on average 90 million plastic bags which converts into 750 tonnes of trash.

The company has replaced single-use plastic bags at the checkout counter in an attempt to do whatever it can to protect the environment and is instead offering a reusable blue bag for sale.  The blue bag is a very durable bag and alternative to single-use plastic bags and sold at cost and can also be used for your shopping trips to supermarkets and other stores.

Laparte said that, in addition to the tremendous waster, the plastic bags also damage the environment.

The company president added that the move also saves the company money.
