Indefinite
Taxi Strike Action Called For Monday
Come Monday hailing a taxi in San Jose or
anywhere in Costa Rica will be something of
a challenge as taxi drivers have announced
an indefinite strike action beginning on
Monday, saying they will no be back on the
job until the government, once and for all,
ends the business of "porteo".
The taxi drivers want legislators to repeal
a motion that gives "porteadores" -
information taxi operators - rights that
they have been acquiring over time.
The taxi drivers federation says that the
many taxi operators will descend on San Jose
on Monday, en route to Casa Presidencial
beginning at 5am>
For their part, porteadores will not take to
the streets to counter the taxis, saying
that they will give the proposal more time
for discussion, however, do not rule out the
possibility that come Monday they will take
to the streets as well.
The strike action is being organized by the
Federación Nacional de Cooperativas de Taxi
that groups the majority of taxi drivers.
