Gasoline Price
Hike Takes Effect Friday
If you need to fill your vehicle's gas tank
do so before Friday when the price of
gasoline at the pumps goes up ˘52 colones
for a litre of super and ˘45 for a litre of
regular.
On Thursday the approved prices will be
published in La Gaceta and take effect at
12:01am Friday at all gasoline stations
around the country, when the price of a
litre of super changes from the current ˘435
to ˘487 and regular from ˘429 to ˘474.
Diesel fuel will be dropping to ˘415.
However, don't wait until the last minute on
Thursday or you may be disappointed.
Although the practice is illegal, some
gasoline stations begin closing early on
Thursday, claiming their tanks empty, only
to re-open after midnight to sell the
cheaper gasoline in their storage tanks for
the higher price, converting into high
profits.
The increase was approved last month by the
Aresep - regulating authority - based on
increases in oil prices on international
markets and the dollar/colon exchange rate.
The Aresep is currently studying a request
by the state refinery - Recope - to lower
gasoline prices ˘3 colones for a litre of
super and ˘29 for diesel. That change, if
approved, would take effect by the middle of
April, pretty sure not in time for Semana
Santa holidays.
