Celebrates 60th Birthday With Taste of
Victory
Although he has yet to declare his
nomination bid for the Partido Unidad Social
Cristiana (PUSC) party for the 2010
presidential elections, former Costa Rican
president Rafael Ángel Calderón's get
together with family and friends to
celebrate his 60th birthday looked more a
presidential campaign win than a birthday
party.
Calderón (1990-1994) is expected to make his
bid for the PUSC party nomination as soon as
his trial on alleged fraud and corruption in
the FIschel-CCSS scandal is over, a trial
that is taking much longer than the former
prex had expected.
Celebrating his 60th, with his wife and
former first lady, Gloria Bejerano, at his
side, the party was colourful and positive
that he will be vindicated at the end of the
judicial process and expects to wind the
2010 elections.
"Rafael Angel has been pursued since he was
in his mother's womb ... his father was not
afraid to face the persecution and exile,
and Rafael Angel was not afraid to make the
best government in the second half of the
twentieth century and to his friends who are
gathered here today we say happy birthday to
a tireless man. The Social Cristiana people
want and is with you", Gloria said
euphorically amid the applause.
The party was held at the Hernán Fournier
farm, where family and friends gathered for
an all day event that included mariachi and
lots of singing.
"I want to return to Zapote (Casa
Presidencial) again" sang Don Rafael and his
wife.
In a speech that was more political than one
of a family gathering, Calderón said the
PUSC is ready to take leader reins in a time
of crisis and that it has been the Unidad
that has had the task of governing during
difficult times in the past.
Don Rafael reminded his audience that his
father, Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia,
governed Costa Rica during the second world
war and was successfull in get approved a
number of reforms that maintained the peace
in Costa Rica.
"I still remember the words I told face to
face to Don Oscar Arias on May 8, 1990 when
we took over the government, saying to him
we were receiving a country with empty
coffers, but when the term ended we left it
bursting. We learned from the crisis, we
learned to bear with courage and firmness,
we learned to drive this country on the
right track " Calderón said.
"It will be up to us (socialcristianos) to
assume another crisis, but we are forged in
sacrifice, in pain and in effort and
absolutely nothing will shove us aside. I am
not tired, and nor expect to be. We will
fight hard and drive the country forward",
Calderón the day.
