Araya 10 Points Ahead of Chinchilla In the Polls
No one could be happier than he himself,
Johnny Araya, who in the latest public
opinion poll by Borge y Asociados is said to
be ahead 10 points on Laura Chinchilla for
the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN)
leadership nomination.
The Borge y Asociados poll places Araya at a
46.5% preference to Chinchilla's 36%. The
poll reveals that 9.5% are undecided and
7.9% will not vote any of the candidates.
Former ministro de Seguridad, Fernando
Berrocal, was not taken into account for the
poll.
At the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), Epsy
Campbell is also leading rival Otón Solís by
a 10% margin. Campbell is holding 45.3% of
the decided voters, while Solís, the founder
of the PAC party and presidential candidate
in the last two elections, is only showing a
35.3% favour. The poll reveals 17.8% are
undecided.
For the time being, Araya and Campbell, are
leading their respective parties in the
polls, but it may be a different situation
at the time of the conventions when party
delegates vote their choice for leader for
the 2010 presidential elections.
The PLN will be holding its convention on
June 7, while the PAC will be holding it a
week earlier, on May 31.
The Borge y Asociados poll reveals that if
the presidential elections were held today,
Araya would be the next president.
The former mayor of San Jose received a
23.2% approval, followed by Chinchilla with
only 17.7%, Solís with 5.9%, Campbell with
4.4%, former Costa Rican president, Rafael
Ángel Calderón (1990-1994) 2.8%, Fernando
Berrocal 1.1% and Movimiento Libertatio
leader, Otto Guevara, 0.3%.
It is important to note that former
president Calderón has yet to make his
nomination bid for the Partido Unidad Social
Cristiana (PUSC) bid as he is currently in
the middle of a trial on alleged fraud and
corruption in the Fischel-CCSS case.
The former president pushed for a speedy
trial so that, as he sees it, be vindicated
and make his presidential bid in 2010. The
trial is dragging.
