Set For New National Stadium
The construction of the new sports stadium
in Costa Rica is now official, as Costa
Rican President Oscar Arias and Chinese
ambassador to Costa Rica Wang Xiaoyuan set
on Thursday the cornerstone. The new
National Stadium of Costa Rica is a donation
by China.
Costa Rican sports authorities, Ministers
and special guests attended the ceremony
that was held at the stadium's site, La
Sabana park.
The new stadium is being erected at the same
site of the old one that was torn down last
year after serving the country for more than
80 years.
The new stadium, yet unmaned, will the most
modern stadium in Central America with a
capacity for 35.000 spectators and will also
serve as a refuge in the event of a national
disaster.
The original estimate was us$72 million
dollars, however, Chinese officials now peg
the final cost near us$83 million dollars
and to be ready for occupancy by late next
year.
The Chinese have imported from China most of
the material and equipment to be used for
the construction of the stadiun, as well as
400 of the 600 workers.
President Arias said "the stadium will be
the head of the country".
The new stadium will also house the offices
of the 32 sports federations in the country
as well as a sports musuem and part of the
cooperation agreements that China and Costa
Rica signed after the reset of their
diplomatic ties in 2007.
The new stadium will be the 'crown jewel' of
the Sabana, an area that has seen a
transformation of being a remote piece of
land west of San Jose, to an international
airport to a national park, soon to be
surrounded by a high rise condominiums.
