Water Rationing During Dry Season
Eighty thousand people living in the Gran
Área Metropolitana (GAM) - Greater
Metropolitan Areas of San José - will have
to endure water rationing during the dry
season, due to an increase in population and
the high consumption of water, according to
the Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA).
The AyA says residents of Río Oro and
Piedades de Santa Ana, La Capri and Los
Guido en Desamparados, Alajuelita and parts
of Coronado, will have their water rationed
from three to six hours daily.
AyA officials say that up to 250.000 may be
included in the water rationing program that
would include some areas in Alajuela, Buenos
Aires de Puntarenas, Puriscal, Atenas and
Esparza, as they are areas where river
levels drop during the dry season, causing
supply problems.
Ricardo Sancho Chavarría, AyA's president,
could not be more clear when he said that
the high consumption of water means that the
utility cannot supply water to the entire
population and such rationing measures have
to be adopted.
Chavarría is asking that everyone begin a
program to reduce their daily water
consumption so that the needs of everyone
can be met. The AyA head said that a 15%
reduction would be ideal.
Chavarría said that the normal consumption
is about 200 litres per day per person, but,
during the dry seaoson consumption increases
in activities such as water gardens and
washing their cars.
Chavarría added that the water rationing
will be determined by the areas of
consumption and would be announced in the
press at least one or two days before the
cuts take effect.
