PAC Today To
Decide On Open Convention
The Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) will meet
today to decide if they will continue under
the leader of its founder, Ottón Solís, in
the 2010 presidential elections or open up
the leadership of the party to a race
between Solís, Epsy Campbell, Román Macaya
and Luis Hernández.
The PAc becamthe official opposition in 2006
only 4 years after being founded by Solís,
losing to Oscar Arias by a slight margin and
replacing the PUSC party in the alternate
role of opposition when not in power.
Today's meeting is an historic event for the
young party, who for the last two
presidential races has held its leadership
choice in private and without a challenge to
Solís' role.
Campbell was the first to declare her
intentions of running for the party
leadership and called for the party to hold
an open convention.
As today's date got closer, Campbell had
been politicking to get support for her
nomination and open convention.
Margarita Bolaños, the PAC's secretary
general, said that the party has opened the
communications line so that all members of
the national assembly can suggest a
mechanism for electing a candidate.
The executive committee is being presided by
Alberto Cañas, who has been working on
establishing a forum for an convention,
according to Bolaños.
Today's meeting is expected to decide, not
if there will be an open convention, but
rather the manner the convention will take
place and who will be allowed to vote at the
convention, which if held, may by on May 20,
according to Bolaños.
