vessel with 25 people aboard sank on
Wednesday off the Pacific coast of Panama
and left one child dead and nine people
missing, the Panamanian National Civil
Protection System announced.
The vessel named "San Miguel Archangel" sank
in Punta Caracoles at 12:50 p.m. local time,
in the southern province of Darien, near the
border with Colombia. Fifteen people on
board were rescued by the Border Police
Service and residents of the community, said
Luis Francisco Sucre, director of the
Panamanian National Civil Protection System.
It was reported that when the accident
occurred, the boat was on its way from the
town of Jaque to the community of Santa Fe.
The boat belongs to a local Catholic Church,
said Francisco Moreno, a local municipal
official.
The Panamanian National Civil Protection
System, Rescue Units, Air Service, and other
relief agencies were still carrying out the
search and rescue mission, using speedboats
and sporting aircraft.
The cause of the accident remained unclear.
