Venezuela Calls Colombian
Defense Minister "A Threat To Regional Stability"
Caracas - Venezuela Tuesday condemned a recent statement by
Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos over Colombia's
military incursion into Ecuador last year, calling the minister "a
threat to the stability and sovereignty of the countries in the
region."
"Minister Santos...again shows his contempt for international law,"
said the government in response to a recent declaration of Santos,
who defended the Colombian military incursion into Ecuadorian
territory to attack a camp of Colombia's largest rebel group -- the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) -- one year ago as a
legitimate action in the fight against terrorism.
The Venezuelan government said in a statement that it is "extremely
worried" about the "irresponsible" remark of Santos.
"The territory of a nation is inviolable and can not be target of
military occupation or other means of force taken by other nations,
directly or indirectly, whatever the reason is, even in a temporary
way," it said.
Santos' declaration was also a threat to the cooperation and peace
agenda that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe agreed in a recent bilateral meeting, the statement
added.
