School Buses Under The
Watchful Eye of
Tránsito Officials
Tránsito (traffic) authorities report that 168 school buses have
fined since the start of the current school year for traffic
violations, including operating without a permit by the Consejo de
Transporte Público (CTP).
The current school year began on February 16.
German Marín, the director de Tránsito, said that the 28 vehicles
without permits have been fined the maximum fine of ¢20.000 colones
allowed, while the other 140 had permits, however, did not meet the
requirements stipulated by law for the transport of students.
Marín sad that 118 of the minivans used as school buses were fined
for seatbelt violations, 87 of which were not using seatbelts and 37
did not provide enough seatbelts for each student carrying.
In addition, 22 school bus drivers were fined for carrying students
standing.
The fine in those cases is only ¢5.000 colones.
However, come September 23, when the new Ley de Tránsito fines kicks
in, the fines will be up to ¢200.000 colones.
Director Marín is asking parents to be vigilant of the school bus
drivers, checking their routes and with the driver's cedular or
license number can check for traffic violations the driver has
summed up by visiting the Cosevi website at
www.csv.go.cr.
In addition, parents are urged to call 911 with any problems they
spot regarding school buses.
