Arias Calls Opposition Accusations
Hypocritical, Foolish and Stupid
Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, called
foolish, stupid and hypocritical the
accusations by opposition parties accusing
him of meddling in party politics and is
asking the country's legislators for a
change in the Código Electoral (Electoral
Code) to eliminate the legal impediment,
which he described as an "aberration".
"They are aberrations that we have in the
country... that one elected, one has to hide
from the party that elected him, that only
exists in this country", said Arias.
"It's healthy for a consolidated democracy
such as ours to remove this article (article
88 of the Electoral Code)", he said.
Arias added that the prohibition only
misleads the public.
"The only thing is stimulates is hypocrisy,
lying and deceiving people", said Arias
while in Limón in a ceremony placing the
corner stone of a building that will used as
a centre for the indigenous.
The president's comments follow the actions
of legislators of the PAC and the Movimiento
Libertario parties who complained to the
Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) about
the Arias comments that it has been his long
time dream to see Costa Rica led by a woman
one day, referring to the election of Laura
Chinchilla as the PLN party presidential
candidate in 2010.
Legislator Sergio Alfaro of the PAC asked
the magistrates of the TSE to sanction the
president for speaking out.
"The President mocks you and your
resolutions", Alfaro said in the letter.
