Millions Fine Imposed
on Venezuelan TV Channel
Caracas - The Servicio Nacional Integrado de
Administracion Aduanera y Tributaria (SENIAT)
imposed today on Globovision a fine for more than
five million bolívares (almost three million
dollars) for omitting tax payments.
This procedure started on March 18, 2004 for the
omission in payment of taxes for broadcasting
messages not declared during the national strike of
2002-2003.
The alleged donations of the TV cannel were
broadcast in publicitary spaces signed by Mujeres
por la Libertad, Coordinadora Democratica and
Renovacion Democratica, among other organizations
used by the opposition against the National
Executive.
SENIAT representative Fanny Marquez declared to
reporters that being the case of donations of
radioelectric space they should have been declared
as they imply a tax which "Globovision did not pay",
she added.
On June 17, 2005, the bosses of the TV opposition
channel presented an appeal with the argument that
the TV messages did not have economic value.
The figure of more than five million bolívares is
corresponding to existing advertisement prices.
In statements to Venezolana de Television, the
Director General of Globovision, Alberto Federico
Ravell said they will defend themselves from the
charges and rejected that channel be accused of
generating anguish and unrest.
