Escazú Tolls
Begin Tomorrow
Get ready to fork over ˘310 colones starting
tomorrow for the right to drive on the
reconstructed autopista Fernando Prospero
from San Jose to Santa Ana.
The Consejo Nacional de Concesiones (CNC)
has authorized the private company that has
the 25 year concession on the highway,
Autopistas del Sol, to begin collecting
tolls at the Escazú tolls station beginning
Sunday, June 7.
Automobiles, as well as motorcycles will be
charged ˘310, buses ˘630 and trucks between
˘790 and ˘1.990, each way.
The tolls on the highway were to have begun
at the beginning of May, but delayed as many
parts of the highway were not completed.
Many of the incompletions continue
today as work crews continue to finish work
on the bridge over the Agres river (Multiplaza),
the Circunvalacion overpass, and the toll
stations themselves.
Guillermo Matamoros, vice-ministo de
Concessiones, said that the work on those
two bridges were not part of the original
design, which means Autopista del Sol has
time to finish the work, but still charge
tolls on the road.
This one point, one of many, has many
puzzled. If the highway was to have been a
six lane highway between San Jose and Santa
Ana, and the two bridges were only four
lanes, how could it not have been part of
the design?
In addition, it was believed that the six
lanes would run from San Jose (Sabana) to
Santa Ana, when in actuality the only
portion of the highway that is six lanes is
between the Circunvalacion and Multiplaza,
save the two bridges, where traffic is
continues to be reduced to four lanes.
Matamoros added that the tolls at Piedades (Cuidad
Coon), Pozon and Costanera Sur are not yet
operational.
