Honduras Hails Cuba Solidarity

San Pedro Sula, Honduras - Honduras' Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Rodas voiced her gratitude for Cuba''s cooperation and solidarity with the Latin American and Caribbean peoples.

Rodas spoke with Prensa Latina after the Organization of American States (OAS) lifted a 47-year-old ban on the island nation's membership.

The decision was approved in a plenary session of the 39th OAS general assembly held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

"We have buried an old horror of the cold war. Our peoples have recovered our dignity with the reparation of that mistake," the Honduran diplomatic head stressed.

The official stated that during negotiations to reach a consensus about the approved bill, the ALBA countries (Bolivia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Dominica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) stressed this could not have any condition.

Cuba is also an ALBA member, termed by the Honduran diplomat a solidarity organization.

Rodas noted we cannot put conditions on Cuba. That country has not requested to return the OAS and has no interest in belonging to an organization headquartered in Washington, controlled by the US Congress.

The lifting of the 1962 resolution that expelled Cuba from the OAS was the apex of the meeting. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega stressed this will delete the stain that weighed on the organization.

The 39th OAS general assembly started Monday at the Honduran-Arab Social Center of San Pedro Sula, 155 miles north of Tegucigalpa, and concluded last night. Among the over 10 resolutions and reports approved are the San Pedro Sula Declaration "Towards a culture of non-violence," the main topic of the conference proposed by Honduras.
