El Salvador Victory Praised
San Salvador - The victory
achieved in the recent elections is the
result of the Salvadoran people''s struggle,
and it was Shafik Handal''s dream, asserted
Tania Bichkova, widow of Farabundo Marti
National Liberation Front (FMLN) leader.
Imagen activa In an interview with Prensa
Latina, the woman who was the revolutionary
leader's wife, recalled his high level of
commitment and devotion to the cause of his
homeland, and his great respect and
admiration for the Cuban Revolution, its
leaders and people.
The conversation developed at the house that
became Shafik Handal museum in this capital,
the restoration of which will begin the
upcoming week to honor the late fighter's
life and memory.
She recalled with admiration when she first
met Shafik, in the former Soviet Union, her
native country, their exchanges and worries
over time, and the way she began to identify
closely with the FMLN's tenacious and heroic
battle to liberate the small Central
American country.
What is happening now in El Salvador is a
great people's victory, in the defeat of the
Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA)
party, after 20 years of it oppressing and
plundering the country, she said.
She also said the Front worked very hard to
make this dream come true, and recalled that
Shafik used to say that if people understand
who their oppressor is, they do not
surrender or sell out, and continue moving
towards their objective, they will achieve
it.
Speaking about the change promised during
the electoral campaign, she said that in her
opinion, the first important change after
the victory has been re-establishing full
relations with Cuba, an agreement signed on
June 1, the date of the new Executive's
inauguration.
That is the kind of change Shafik dreamed
about. He admired what Cuba has done:
building a revolution in the face of the
Empire and he always told me about it,
Bichkova said.
