Ecuadorian President Urges OAS
Nations to
Apologize to Cuba For Isolation
Tegucigalpa - Visiting Ecuadorian
President Rafael Correa said on Sunday that members
of the Organization of American States (OAS) should
apologize to Cuba for expelling the country from the
organization.
During his visit to Honduras before the opening of
the 39th OAS general assembly on Tuesday, Correa
urged all OAS countries to apologize to Cuba for
having banned it from the Washington-based
organization in 1962.
The 1962 OAS resolution shut Cuba out of the group
following U.S. embargoes on the country.
While a majority of Latin American members are
expected to support Cuba's readmission at the OAS
meeting, Havana says it has no interest in
returning.
Correa arrived in San Pedro Sula on Sunday and was
welcomed by Honduran President Manuel Zelaya. An
agreement on tourism was signed by the two leaders.
Correa will travel to El Salvador on Monday to
attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect
Mauricio Funes. He will return to Honduras on
Tuesday to attend the OAS general assembly. |
