Nicaraguans Celebrate Mother's Day With Big Party
Mother's Day in Nicaragua was
the reason for the big party on Sunday in the Plaza de las
Garantías Sociales, as thousands of Nicaraguans who couldn't
be in their homeland, celebrated the day honouring all
mothers.
While the majority of countries that celebrate Mother's Day
do so on the second Sunday of May, Mother's Day in Nicaragua
is celebreated on May 30th.
In Costa Rica, Mother's Day is celebrated on August 15.
Missing from the day's festivities were officials of the
Nicaraguan embassy and consulate, according to Fátima
Aguirre of the Asociación Binacional, responsible for
organizing the activity.
Aguirre said that some 3.000 people attended the event that
went on for most the day, the weather holding out the rain
until late afternoon.
The big sponsor of the event was the Banco de Costa Rica (BCR),
that provided many of the prizes and music for the event.
Only recently dubbed “Mother's Day,” the highly traditional
practice of honoring of Motherhood is rooted in antiquity,
and past rites typically had strong symbolic and spiritual
overtones; societies tended to celebrate Goddesses and
symbols rather than actual Mothers. In fact, the personal,
human touch to Mother’s Day is a relatively new phenomenon.
The maternal objects of adoration ranged from mythological
female deities to the Christian Church itself. Only in the
past few centuries did celebrations of Motherhood develop a
decidedly human focus.
