The Romeria
and Back To School Are In "Veremos" Due To
Flu Virus
The annual pilgrimage to Cartago, the "romeria"
and the return of back to school on Monday
is in hold (veremos) as the ministerio de
Salud assesses the situation with the AH1N1
flu virus.
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila,
explained that she will meet today with
representatives of the Catholic church and
the director of Salud of Cartago to discuss
the measures in place to protect the public
from infection of the virus that has already
claimed 12 lives in Costa Rica.
Ministra Ávila said that one possibility is
to totally cancel the romeria.
However, Jorge Eddy Solórzano, rector of the
de Nuestra Seńora de Los Ángeles, said it
will be impossible to stop the million or so
people who are accustomed to visiting the
Virgen de Los Angeles on August 1 and 2.
Solórzano added that, for this year, the
measures are strict.
Ministra Ávila also discussed the
possibility of extending the mid-year school
vacation another week, a decision that could
come as late as Thursday.
The mid-year school vacation was already
extended a week - this week - as schools are
were set to re-open on July 20, but extended
to July 27th.
The ministra said that if the virus reaches
an infection rate of 15 per 100.000
inhabitants, then the decision to keep
schools will be automatic. Currently the
infection rate is 9.2
