Former Guerrilla Leader Warns of More Coups
In Latin America
Guatemala - A former guerilla leader in
Guatemala warned on Sunday that more similar
coups would occur in Latin America once the
Honduras coup survives.
The June 28 Honduras coup raised the specter
of further similar coups would follow suit
in Latin America, said Pablo Monsanto.
"There is a risk that other coups will occur
in Latin America," he said.
Monsanto, a signatory to Guatemala's 1996
Peace Accords, said the coup had been
encouraged by a powerful economic group and
backed by the United States.
If the coup survived, it represented a huge
reverse for Latin America, he said.
Armed rebel movements were not appropriate
for the new democratic trend in the region,
but were now a real fact that would have to
be faced in the wake of a post-coup
government that repressed its population by
force, he said.
Monsanto was one of the four commanders of
the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unit,
which signed a peace agreement with
Guatemalan government, ending more than 30
years of civil conflict. |
