Nicaraguans Expect to Have World Wonder
Managua - Nicaraguans expect the island of Ometepe to be chosen as one of the world''s
seven natural wonders, Julio Videa Alvarez,
an official with the Nicaraguan Tourism
Institute (INTUR), said.
According to the INTUR web page, the island
was included in the group of 77 sites that
qualified for the finals in this
international contest.
The last stage to choose the world's seven
natural wonders in different categories will
begin on July 21. The jury of experts will
be headed by UNESCO Director General
Federico Mayor Zaragoza.
This new round will focus on the ecological
and historic values, location, surroundings
and unique animal or plant species, Videa
Alvarez noted when highlighting the values
of Ometepe, the only island in a freshwater
lake.
According to Videa Alvarez, who is the INTUR
director for promotion and marketing, that
condition favors Ometepe, as most islands in
the contest are in the sea and none of them
has two volcanoes.
The Central American candidates that
qualified for the finals are Coatepeque Lake
in El Salvador, Coco Island in Costa Rica,
Atitlan Lake in Guatemala and the Platanos
Forest in Honduras. |
