Minister Resignation in Guatemala
Guatemala - The Interior minister's
resignation and the immediate appointment of
his replacement characterized the end of the
week in Guatemala this Saturday.
Salvador Gandara, with only six months at
the helm of the Interior Ministry, said to
have given his resignation for personal
reasons, but is interpreted here as his
powerlessness faced with the country's
increasing insecurity and impunity.
Just a few hours after his decision was made
public, the government announced and took
the oath of Raul Velasquez, an active
participant in the electoral campaign that
brought Alvaro Colom to the presidency.
Lawyer by profession and former Interior
Ministry's Deputy Minister for Community
Support (April-June), the new Interior chief
was at the helm of the security plan
proposed by National Unity of Hope Party to
win followers.
Now he is said to have fresh programs, with
prospects to be effective to fight those who
promote national violence, mainly drug
trafficking and organized crime. |
