Study: No Benefit Seen From Lowering Blood
Pressure Below Standard
A study from the University of Costa Rica
suggests there may be no clinical benefit to
aim to lower blood pressure below standard
targets.
Lead author Dr. Jose Arguedas said there was
no evidence that prescribing medication to
lower blood pressure below the 140/90 mm Hg
standard saves lives from heart attacks,
strokes, heart failure or kidney failure.
Arguedas' review was based on the results of
seven trials involving a total of 22,089
people. While participants aiming to lower
blood pressure did so, there was no
indication these efforts led to longer life.
"At present, there is no evidence from
randomized trials to support aiming for a
blood pressure target lower than the 140/90,
in the general population of patients with
elevated blood pressure," Arguedas said in a
statement.
