Guatemala Rivers Threaten Overflow
Guatemala - Large Guatemalan rivers
threaten to overflow after strong rains last
week.
The National Institute of Seismology,
Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH)
and the National Coordinator for Reduction
of Disasters (CONRED) maintain close watch
with measurements taken twice a day.
Both institutions registered increased
levels of Potochic River in Alto Verapaz
department, as well as along Grande Zacapa
(Chiquimula), the Paz rivers bordering with
Coyolate (Shuchitepequez) and San Pedro (Peten)in
El Salvador.
Some rivers even show signs of overflowing
such as Polochic and Marialinda, in
Escuintla according to INSIVUMEH director,
Eddy Sanchez.
Technicians of CONRED also set up special
equipment to measure overflow figures in Los
Chorros mountains in San Cristobal Verapaz,
Alta Verapaz that registered increases of
the Chixoy river.
The instruments allow exact measurements for
early warnings to the population, while
there have already been landslides that
caused blockages of two roads. |
