President Snubs Visiting
Taiwanese Leader
TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwanese media say
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has
apologized for repeatedly canceling
appointments with the visiting Taiwanese
leader.
The cold shoulder Ma Ying-jeou appears to
have received in Nicaragua made headlines in
Taiwanese media Sunday.
Ma was making his first state visit to
Nicaragua since he took office 13 months
ago. Newspapers said Ortega was gesturing
his anger at Taiwan for ceasing its past
generous financial assistance to the Latin
American country amid the island's improving
ties with rival China.
For decades, Taiwan and China had tried to
lure away each other's allies with grants or
aids. The diplomatic war has eased following
Ma's call for improving political ties with
China, from which Taiwan split amid civil
war in 1949 |
