Magnitude Earthquake Hits Panama
Panama - A moderate
earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter
scale rocked Panama City at 11:10 p.m. local
time Sunday (0410 GMT, Monday) and can be
felt in the capital city. So far there were
no reports of casualties.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on
its website that the quake was centered on
an area 95 km northeast of Panama City and
has a depth of 30.9 km.
A Panama City resident, awakened by the
temblor, rushed to the street wearing a
pajama.
"My son was sleeping when the earthquake
happened and he was awakened by it. But
tonight I obviously felt that the quake was
not as strong as the one that occured in the
early morning of Saturday. So I wasn't
afraid at all," he said.
This is the second earthquake to hit the
Central American nation in two days. A
6.0-magnitude quake rocked Panama early
Saturday morning. Since its epicenter was
located in the sparsely populated province
of San Blas, the quake only caused the
collapse of some houses and bridges, but did
not result in significant casualties and
property losses.
