Lots Of Room In Prisons For Drunk Drivers
Drunk drivers do not have to fear overcrowding of the prisons as the Ministerio de Justicia has opened a new wing in the Liberia, Guanacaste, prison to ensure that all those drunk drivers who have been caught by traffic officials and convicted, will have a place to call home.

The unit made room for 104 selected prisoners who will be moved from other prisons. The selection is based on their conduct and risk and their willingness to work and study while imprisoned.

the prisoners in the Liberia penitentiary will be able to work on farms in the production of produce, fruit and eggs, while their discount their debt to society.

The new Ley de Tránsito calls for any driver caught with a 0.75 blood alcohol content to be charged as a criminal and the courts can send the offending driver for up to three years prison for the first offence.

Although the first trial under the new drunk driving law has been suspended, as the trial judge referred to the case to the Constitutional Court for a clarification of some of the articles, a number of drunk drivers have already opted to waive the trial and pleaded guilty and sentenced by the Tribunales de Flagrancia.
