Divorces Down
Divorces in Costa Rica for
2008 was down 5% over the previous year according to the Registro
Civil of the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE), while the total
number of marriages registered was up.
In 2008, a total of 10.351 couples divorced passing the record of
10.926 spearations in 2007, while 25,302 marriages were registered,
1.116 more than in 2007.
The month with the highest number of divorces registered was October
with 1.118.
Experts believe that Costa Ricans are opting for more "unión libre"
- common law relationship - rather contracting nuptials.
According to the Instituto de Estadísticas y Censos 451.559 people
live in unión libre in the country.
Some four decades back the record number of divorces in one year
reached a total of 7.
