Ortega for Austerity
Measures to Face Crisis
Managua -
Nicaraguan President
Daniel Ortega has
proposed a series of
strict economic measures
to face the current
economic crisis of
capitalism.
Despite the
readjustments made by
the president, the 2009
projected expenditure
will be 16.5 percent
over last year.
In an address to the
nation, Ortega reported
on the achievements
reached in 2008,
including the reduction
of illiteracy and
mortality rate, and the
increase of eye
surgeries through
Operation Miracle, with
the help of Cuban
experts.
He noted the economy is
expected to grow between
2 and 3 percent this
year, based on
agricultural and
livestock production,
the country's leading
sector.
Regarding the
government, Ortega
indicated current
expenses for the
acquisition of goods and
services will be cut by
20 percent.
Meanwhile, he called
Nicaraguans to support
the program for
production, growth, and
job.
