Deportation of
Guatemalans Still On
Guatemala - A total of
558 Guatemalan citizens
were deported from the
US, just in the first
days of this year,
according to data given
by the Migration General
Office (DGM) published
here Monday.
The most recent flights
came on Friday with 257
Guatemalans caught in
raids carried out in
different states of the
US.
Since the US government
hardened its
anti-migration policy,
the number of
repatriates grew from
7,029 cases in 2005 to
27,929 in 2008, DGM
said.
Besides the trauma for
the separation of many
families, the
deportations provoked a
deceleration of the
growth rhythm of the
remittances, which the
third part of the
Guatemalan population is
living of.
The Bank of Guatemala
said that 4.314 billion
dollars entered the
national territory by
this concept, for an
increase of 4.5 percent,
the smallest registered
in this Central American
country since 1999.
