Obtaining a metal
license plate in Costa
Rica is no longer a
process of waiting for
up 60 days or more, as
the Registro Nacional
streamlines its system
and eliminates the paper
"temporary" plates that
have been a problem for
police for some time.
The Registro Nacional
(National Registry) will
now process all license
plate applications
within three days, that
is owners of registered
vehicles will no longer
get the paper permits on
submitting a vehicle
registration, but rather
a piece of paper to pick
the metal metal three
days later.
The Registro processes
more than 500 license
plates requests daily
and according to the
Ministra de Justicia,
Viviana Martín, who
until recently occupied
the post of
vice-minister of
Transportes, "metal
license plates will be
issued within 72 hours
maximum."
Of course, the three day
turn around period is
based on the plate
application being fully
filled out and there are
no problems with the
title registration and
all supporting
documents, like the tax
receipt, Riteve
inspection certificate,
customs documents, etc.
are all handed in and
are in order.
Minister Martín added
that the new metal
plates also have an
additional security
measure that includes a
small flag of Costa Rica
and replacement plates
can be done in 30
minutes, instead of the
minimum 24 hours that
was the case in the
