Rice And Bread To Drop
In Price This Month
The Ministerio de
Economía, Industria y
Comercio (MEIC) said it
will be demanding a drop
of between 10% and 14%
in the price of bread
and rice, following a
drop in international
prices.
Eduardo Sibaja, MEIC
vice-minister, said that
the price of bread has
to drop by the end of
the month and rice in
the first week in
February and that if
business does not do so
voluntarily, the
government will force
the drop by way of
executive order.
Sibaja said that the
drop is based on a drop
on prices for rice and
wheat on international
markets. Costa Rica
imports 50% of the
national rice
consumption and 100% of
all wheat. Sibaja added
that with a little push,
local rice producers can
increase production for
and reduce rice imports
to 40%.
