Says Not Worried Over Araya's 11% Lead In The Polls
The 11% lead by former San José mayor, Johnny Araya, in the
nomination elections for the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) party
does not have Laura Chinchilla worried the least bit, rather she
says that she is now even more confident that whe will take the PLN
party convention by storm.
"The results of the last poll are a reflection of a moment that is
already in the past", said Laura, who added that in the beginning
the candidates for the party's leadership were almost unknown, but
different now that the process has heated up.
Chinchilla, who stepped down as the country's vice-president to run
for the party nomination, has been the front runner and the personal
choice of Costa Rican president Oscar Arias to follow his
administration. Arias was reprimanded by the elections tribunal for
speaking out in favour of a candidate and has since kept quiet,
though in the back rooms, Chinchilla is still his choice.
Araya has been coming up in the polls due to his presence in many of
the San José municipal events during the holiday season and the
media attention when he stepped down as mayor following some 15
years in the mayor's chair, according to Chinchilla.
The former San José mayor has also been trying to distinguish
himself as not the "same old" candidate, urging voters to look at
his record and decided for themselves that his is the best candidate
to lead the country in 2010.
Araya said he was pleased with the latest results and was
recognition of his work as mayor and a leader who knows how to do
things.
"The people have identified with my leadership abilities", said
Araya, who added that his message has not only begun to heat up the
PLN candidates, but, rather all Costa Ricans.
The numbers of the latest public opinion poll shows that 50% would
vote for Araya at the June 7 convention, while only 39% would vote
for Chinchilla, and only 2% for former Seguridad minister, Fernando
Berrocal. The fourth candidate, Carlos Francisco Echeverría, did not
even register in the poll.
The Unimer poll took in the opinion of 1.225 Costa Ricans over the
age of 18 from all around the country, of which 31% said they would
attend the PLN convention. The poll has a 5% margin of error.
