20 Indigenous Awa Killed in
Southwest Colombia
Bogota - At least 20 members of the indigenous Awa group have been
killed by rebels in the south-western province of Narino, Colombian
authorities said Monday.
The victims were killed last week by armed groups in two villages
near the municipalities of Samaniego and Barbacoa, about 554km
southwest to Bogota.
"It is a large number (of victims). We have not be able to talk with
the Awa leader," said Antonio Navarro, the Narino governor. "I have
got indirect information that says in two separate places the total
number of dead people is 20."
Navarro attributed the attacks to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC), the largest guerilla group in Colombia.
Clashes between the army and guerillas, drug trafficking and illegal
paramilitary activities have caused the displacement of thousands
people from their communities in Colombia.
