Guanacaste Hosts Condovac
Triathlon and ‘Earth to Space’ Race
(InfoWebPress) – The dry season marks the beginning of athletic
events in Guanacaste, and February will feature two important races.
The third edition of the Condovac La Costa Triathlon will be held in
Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, Feb. 21-22. Organizers have confirmed the
attendance of the country’s top athletes in this discipline and more
than 300 total participants, both local and international.
Youth categories will compete on the 21st, while the elite women’s
and elite men’s races will be held on the 22nd. The event will offer
cash prizes. There will also be a relay race.
Registration will take place Feb. 9-18 at the offices of the United
Triathlon Federation (FEUTRI) and at Tienda Runners in Pavas,
Curridabat and Heredia.
Meanwhile, the “Earth to Space Race” will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28
at 3 p.m. on the La Flor campus of Earth University in Liberia.
Participating in the race will be renowned Costa Rican physicist and
former NASA astronaut Frankling Chang Diaz.
Also competing will be successful Guanacaste triathlonist Leonardo
Chacon.
Race categories include youth (up to 19 years of age), adult (20 to
34 years of age), veteran A (35 to 39 years of age), and veteran B
(40 years of age and older). Registration cost in 3,500 colones
(3,000 colones for Costa Rican Chamber of Construction affiliates).
For the general public, registration for the race is 2,000 colones.
Registration for this event will close on Feb. 27. Those interested
in participating can register at Costa Rican Chamber of Construction
offices, Supercompro Liberia, and Family Fitness Center Gym.
Money collected from ‘Earth to Space’ registration will go toward
improving a Liberia street, Via Capulin, where many students walk.
Following the race there will be sales of food and drinks. Attendees
will also have the chance to have a caricature made with Chang Diaz.
There will also be a Football 5 field and inflatables for children.
The La Flor Farm will also make a horse available for kids to ride,
and Chang Diaz will be selling his book, among other activities.
Guanacaste is consolidating as an ideal place for athletic
competitions. Proof of that is the Tamarindo Beach Marathon, which
held its second edition last August, sanctioned by the International
Association of Athletic Federations as part of its elite marathon
circuit.
Last year’s edition provided a glimpse of what the 2009 race might
bring, as organizers invited two Kenyan runners who won the marathon
and the 30-kilometer race.
Due to the new status of the Tamarindo race, Victor Lopez, president
of the organizing committee, said that for the 2009 edition at least
100 North American racers have already registered, and 200 other
foreign athletes are expected to compete as well. |
