FMLN Drive Freaks Out Conservatives

San Salvador - A possible victory of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) at upcoming presidential elections in El Salvador raise concern among conservative ranks.

The heads of traditional allies of government Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) Party call to boycott FMLN candidate Mauricio Funes at the March 15 polls.

National Conciliacion Party General Secretary (PCN) Ciro Cruz said his ranks are willing to join ARENA to win the race.

La Prensa Grafica on-line says Cruz called to support conservative ideology and evict from the PCN anyone with progressive feelings refusing to vote.

PCN Legislator Elizardo Gonzalez says rivalry between two groups of similar trend benefits the left so his party withdrew.

ARENA candidate Rodrigo Avila said he has met with numerous people, "alluding to negotiations with the PCN, The Christian-Democrat Front and Democrat Revolutionary Front" to build a coalition joining weak political parties.

But Salvadoran analysts consider a mistake to match decisions by oligarchic elites with the stand of local leaders. They rather avoid the term polarization on assessing the developments.

ARENA also resorts to election promises to win over supporters by announcing social projects never implemented along its 20-year neoliberal agenda.
