Guatemala Bus Owners Threaten to Strike

Guatemala -  Transport owners in the Guatemalan metropolitan area on Friday threatened to paralyze the service from the municipalities to the capital, as a measure of pressure to maintain high bus fares.

The strike will affect dozens of thousands of people who use the service to get to workplaces or schools.

According to bus owners, the decree issued by the government to regulate tariffs and adjust them to reduced oil prices was not consulted with them before its taking into effect on Wednesday.

The 25-50 percent discount established with the new prices benefit passengers of some 1,700 units that daily offer their services.

The government had allowed owners increase fares in mid 2008, when diesel was charged over five dollars per gallon.

Though hydrocarbons prices dropped by nearly 60 percent, bus owners maintained the same fares, thus arising complains within the population.
