Venezuela Gears for Amendment

Caracas - President Hugo Chavez' supporters will begin Wednesday what they have called the fifth round for support of the constitutional amendment that proposes constant reelection of public offices.

The initiative includes putting an end to the term of offices established in the Magna Carta for the President of the Republic, deputies, mayors, regional legislators and governors.

Nearly 17 million registered Venezuelans will vote for the Yes or No on February 15, while latter option has lost supporters according to the last poll published, including right-wing sectors.

In his recent article the Head of Government called this new stage a Double Armored Attack that consists of revitalizing and deploying its supporters through the over 100,000 committees for YES created all over the country.

This drive is opposed to the opposition efforts that in the last few weeks began to show signs of desperation with violent actions and planned destabilization.

The Head of State considered those events are part of the so-called Puerto Rico Pact where Venezuelan opposition leaders joined government officials of President George W. Bush.
