Puerto Rico is criticizing Nicaragua's
president for describing the island as a
modern-day colony of the United States.
The U.S. territory's secretary of state,
Kenneth McClintock, says in a letter to the
Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington that
islanders have freely chosen to remain
American citizens.
McClintock said Friday that he wanted to
respond to the "undue intervention" by
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. He said
the Caribbean island's status is for Puerto
Rico and the U.S. to decide.
Ortega, a critic of U.S. policy, said at a
summit in Trinidad last weekend that Puerto
Rico should have attended as its own
country.
The U.S. seized Puerto Rico following the
Spanish-American War in 1898.
