Colombia Government Endangers Hostages Lives

Bogota - Colombian Liberal Senator Piedad Cordoba denounced on Thursday that the government''s military pressure against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is putting in danger the lives and unilateral release of of noncommissioned officer Pablo Emilio Moncayo and other people held by the guerrilla.

Cordoba warned that the government is focused on carrying out a second "Operacion Jaque"; that's the reason behind its constant military harassment in the area, where the hostages allegedly are.

She referred to the Army operation to rescue French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, three US citizens and 11 Colombian military on July 2, 2008.

We have very serious information around the existence of a sort of Operacion Jaque, which puts in serious risk the lives of the son of Professor Gustavo Moncayo and other people, and "that is certainly not our responsibility," she warned.

We, in Colombianos por la Paz have done everything possible, we have worked hard and knocked all doors, but we think it is is better to let this possibility of release pass than have someone killed," she added.
