President Martin Torrijos said on Tuesday
that he will respect the results of the
coming general elections on May 3 and he
rejected the opposition's suspicion on a
possible fraud.
"I have a compromise with my country, as it
has always been, and here will not happen
anything else but the respect to the
people's will," Torrijos said.
Recently the candidate from the opposition
Democratic Change Party, Ricardo Martinelli
said that the ruling Democratic
Revolutionary Party (PRD) could be plotting
a fraud in favor of its candidate, former
Housing minister, Balbina Herrera.
"I think the democracy is damaged, it is
irresponsible and unfair, because we all
know how the electoral process works and
itis impossible to make a fraud," Torrijos
said.
Martinelli was defeated by President Martin
Torrijos in the previous election. His
rivals in the current elections are Balbina
Herrera from the PRD and former president
Guillermo Endara.
Some 2.2 million Panamanians registered to
vote for a new president whose term will be
from 2009 to 2014.
