Clandestine Cemetery Investigated in El Salvador

San Salvador – The Salvadoran Attorney General’s Office is investigating the find of what appears to be a clandestine cemetery containing street-gang victims in the central town of Colon.

A spokesperson for the AG’s office told Efe on Tuesday that the site is being investigated, but refrained from providing further details, saying it could harm the investigation process.

A report published this Tuesday in the daily El Diario de Hoy said that investigators are working to dig up 10 bodies, which apparently belonged to victims of street gangs or “maras.”

According to the newspaper, the victims, among whom might be the youth who went missing in December 2008 in the nearby small town of Las Moras, were shot or stabbed to death.

The National Civil Police told the paper about the discovery of bones at the place where the presumed cemetery is being investigated in an area near Colon.

Police said that the assailants could have taken advantage of the place being remote and surrounded by a coffee plantation to bury the bodies.

The report said that in this area the Mara Salvatrucha gang operates and that investigators do not rule out as a possible cause of the murders a dispute between gangs. EFE
