Forest Fires Scorch Thousands of Acres in
Nicaragua
Managua - At least 2,011 hectares (4,965
acres) of forest have burned in Nicaragua’s
northern, western and Caribe Norte regions
since January, officials said.
A total of 483 hectares (1,192 acres) have
burned in the northern provinces of Esteli,
Nueva Segovia and Madriz, Sinapred national
emergency management office chief Rafael
Ramirez told the public Canal 4 television
station.
Fires broke out around the Masaya volcano,
south of Managua, destroying 40 hectares (99
acres) of forest, Ramirez said.
The fires have started and spread because of
the dry season in the Central American
country, the emergency management official
said.
Fires have also consumed 1,488 hectares
(3,674 acres) of forests in the western
province of Chinandega and in the Caribe
Norte region, where Hurricane Felix toppled
millions of trees when it made landfall on
Sept. 4, 2007, providing fuel for the
blazes, Ramirez said. EFE
