While the Partido Accion Cuidadana (PAC) and
the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) are
getting ready for their conventions to
choose a leader for the 2010 presidential
elections, the Partido Unidad Social
Cristiana (PUSC) has been quiet. Until
yesterday.
Luis Fishman, executive president of the
PUSC, said that the party is ready for the
February 7, 2010, elections and yesterday
unveiled a new logo and giving the party a
new identity, "La Unidad" instead of using
the PUSC.
Altought the party does not have anyone
lined for a leadership nomination, nor has
it announced any details of a convention to
choose a leader, Fishman gave some details
of what the campaign will looklike.
"We are looking to create a conscience of
all the problems that have been increasing
and are not being solved by the current
leaders. We want the people to be conscious
that they need a solution", said Fishman.
Fishman added that his party has the answers
to unemployment, insecurity, poverty and the
abandonment of the social programs that his
party helped create.
"We are a party with a 25 year history, and
has achieved great strides for the country,
but we do have a challenge ahead of us",
said Fishman.
La Unidad is keeping open the registration
for nominations until April 29 and is
planning a convention in July. However, no
one has come forward to place their name in
the hat.
The party is putting its hopes on the
leadership of former president, Rafael Ángel
Calderón (19890-1994), to place his name on
the nomination registration.
However, Calderón is currently in the middle
of a trial for corruption, a trial that is
taking longer than anticipated and one that
Calderón is convinved will find him not
guilty and vindicate him and paving the way
for his return to power.
Earlier this week, one of the co-accused at
trial, Corporacion Fischel former president,
Walter Reiche, made damming statements
against Calderón, which could greatly
influence the direction and outcome of the
trial.
Calderón has said repeatedly that he will
make his decision to run or not independent
of the trial and its outcome.
